Energy Savings for Your Home
Are you concerned about the cost of your monthly power bill? An energy right Home Energy Survey may be just the tool to help you identify areas where you can lower energy usage and save money! Holston Electric Cooperative customers can follow the link www.energyright.com to complete the survey online or can request the paper version be mailed to you.
Here are a few simple tips you can follow to help reduce the amount of energy you use this summer and help lower your electric bill:
- Install a programmable or automatic thermostat and keep your thermostat on your air conditioning unit set at 78 degrees or higher.
- Keep the filters of your air conditioning unit clean. Change the fiberglass ones and wash the aluminum mesh ones monthly.
- If you own an old cooling unit, consider replacing it with an energy-efficient unit. When buying a new cooling unit, buy the highest SEER rating you can afford. SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) is a federal government standard. Trying to save money on the initial purchase of a system will cost you more each month when operating the unit.
- Keep all appliances that produce heat away from your air conditioner thermostat. The heat they produce can cause your air conditioner to run longer than needed.
- Replace regular incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFLs.) CFLs produce less while using a fraction of the electricity.
